RULES AND REGULATIONS

International Youth Piano Competition is open to pianists of ages from 8 to 21 years old.

SCHEDULE

The 2019 competition live round will be held at Holy Virgin Mary Cathedral in Los Angeles, CA.


Preliminary: October 15, 2019


Final: November 2, 2019 


Award Ceremony: November 3, 2019

Application Fee - 100$ (non - refundable)

 

 

ELIGIBILITY

AGE CATEGORY A - 8 to 11*

 

AGE CATEGORY B - 12 to 15*

 

AGE CATEGORY C - 16 to 21* 

 

Application Deadline is October 15, 2019 (PST)

 

COMPETITION STAGES

PRELIMINARY ROUND (ONLINE)

  • Participants have to submit a video recording that should be a fair representation of the contestant’s abilities with visible hands at all times but need not be of professional quality. All compositions must be performed by memory, including those for the First Online Round

  • The board of judges will choose finalists that will advance to the final round.  Finalists will be announced on the website and will be notified personally by e-mail on or before  October 18, 2019

 

FINAL ROUND

  • Finalists will perform on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at Concert Hall of Holy Virgin Mary Cathedral.

  • The Winners will be announced at Award Ceremony, on Sunday, November 3, 2019

  • All the decisions of the adjudicators are FINAL

  • All the finalists will be provided with hard copies written personal comments on their performances

  • All the winners must attend the Award Ceremony to receive the prizes, and perform in the Winner's Concert on Sunday, November 3, 2019

  • Global Musical Bridges reserves the right to terminate the Competition, in whole or in part, and/or adjust, amend or suspend the Competition, and/or the Rules in any way, at any time, for any reason without prior notice

  • All photos and videos taken during the Competition will exclusively belong to Global Musical Bridges and can be published and used for any promotional purposes.

REPERTOIRE

PRELIMINARY ROUND (ONLINE)

  • Participants of all categories must submit a video recording performing a free choice repertoire (max duration 15 minutes, representing two contrasting compositions of Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary** Era.

  • The recording may include either or not the same pieces which will be played in the Final Live competition round

 

FINAL ROUND

  • Contestants of categories A should prepare two compositions of contrasting styles of Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary** Era

  • Contestants of category B should prepare two compositions of contrasting styles, one of which has to be written by Russian* composer. The other two can represent two contrasting compositions of Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary** Era 

  • Contestants of category C should prepare three compositions of contrasting styles, one of which has to be written by Sergey Rachmaninoff. The other two can represent two contrasting compositions of Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary** Era 

  • Contestants must perform from memory in all rounds including preliminary recordings. No simplified versions of traditional repertoire are allowed. No free improvisation or pop music is acceptable. The program should be played by memory with no repeats

  • No repertoire changes are allowed after the application is submitted or at any point during the competition                                   

*Composers representing former Soviet Union republics are allowed (i.e. Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, etc.);          

**For compositions written after 1960 participants must provide the Judges with the original music score (no photocopies).

 

The time limit for the Final Round performances:

Category A – up to 10 min | Category B – up to 15 min  |  Category C – up to 20 min

JURY

The competitors will be judged by a jury selected by the Competition Organizing Committee. The Jury for the II International Youth Piano Competition will be composed of professional and acclaimed pianists, conductors and composers. The decisions of the panel for all rounds shall be final. Every year the jury panel will be represented by new names. 

ADJUDICATION PROCEDURE

  • The adjudicating procedure will include the Jury panel closed discussion and personal voting after each round. No point system will be used.

  • All the Jury decisions are final.

  • The Jury reserves the right: not to award any of the prizes; to split a prize between several contestants; to stop any performance which exceeds posted time limits or does not meet professional standards; to disqualify any candidate who does not comply with any of Competition’s regulations or norms of social behavior.
